As the number of Americans over the age of 65 increases and the field of health care becomes more highly specialized, the demand for trained nurses in all areas of medical care also increases and more jobs are created. Nursing colleges in Shreveport-Bossier City provide training for students in many different aspects of the nursing profession and in the 21st century, there are many nursing jobs available with relatively high salaries. The average salary for an RN resident nurse in Shreveport is approximately $51,000 per year while the average salary for an RN emergency room nurse is almost $69,000 per year.

Northwestern State University’s College of Nursing has the oldest nursing program in Louisiana that is supported and accredited by the state. NSU’s Nursing Education Center includes the Line Avenue School, which trains students in general academic subjects and clinical nursing, the Warrington Building, the Faculty Tower, and the Library, which houses classrooms, computer and multimedia centers, a nursing skills laboratory, a large lecture hall and the medical library. NSU’s College of Nursing grants both RN and MSN degrees. Average yearly tuition is $552 for Louisiana residents and $1,104 for people who live in other states. Southern University at Shreveport has a Division of Allied Health and Nursing that confers graduates with an Associate of Science in Nursing degree, and Louisiana Technical College’s Shreveport-Bossier Campus has been offering several different RN degree programs since 1982.
