Always readin' about those Pit Bull attacks..
To be honest, I'm not a big fan of Pit Bulls, but I know they have some fans.
I know I've read of certain cities that either have or have tried to ban the breed. Which I never felt was fair. I've always felt that a dog is as good as its owner... just assume that these dogs that 'attack' were trained to be that way ? or just generally raised to be mean ?

But we just keep reading about these Pit Bulls.. is it because it makes a good news story, or really that prevalent. I've had a few dogs, I could never imagine any of them attacking ANYONE. did have one that wouldn't let the Dominos guy out of his vehicle.

Pugs are the most offensive and obnoxious of all of God's creatures. They blow snot in your face! Pits Bulls run a close second. They bite!

HaHa rhertz

Just wipe his little nose for him and kiss his fuzzy lil head for me. What a sweety! I've loved pugs ever since I first saw "Milo and Otis". There was a story in Thursday's Times about how the police shot a "charging dog". What a crock. They can just Taze the dog, or use a stun baton, or beanbag rounds from the shotgun, or rubber bullets. There is absolutely no reason to shoot the dog when there are less-than-lethal alternatives. Sounds to me like the cops just look for any excuse to shoot..."Oh I had to shoot em, he was comin right at me!" Spare me.

I would certainly like to agree with you on this one. I would like to think there is an alternative to killing the dog.

However, since I don't know the whole story. Put yourself in front of a large powerful pit bull, intent on ripping out your throat. And all you have is your gun. What would you do ? Sure you could try and kick him in the head or hit him with a baton, but don't miss !!!

And oh yea..

My grandfather breeds pugs and he has never had a problem with cleanliness (apart from a slight pet odor because he owns 5 pugs and a German Shepard). My only complaint on pugs is that they snore LOUDER than most people. O_o;;

As far as pit bulls, I don't know if it's just the media's favorite "attack dog" or if there is really a natural killer instinct in this particular breed. However, I'm probably more with LateNight. Any dog can be trained to be obedient.

However, what kind of people typically own pit bulls? Perhaps the macho steriotypes who prefer the dog because of its killer reputation and thus encourage the dog to be that way. We give it the reputation, the reputation feeds the desire to own it, owning it encourages it to be. Maybe we are to blame for the way pit bulls are.

Put yourself in front of a large powerful pit bull,

Mace or tazer would make that large powerful pit bull in to a puppy ! I am not in favor of loose animals of any kind but anytime a hand gun is fired there is a chance someone or something else might get hit. I do not work in the area of town these police officers do so it is hard to say what that moment was like.
Tie goes to the officer

I think if there's a dog on the loose, and it's giving people trouble, I'm in favor of having it destroyed. It seems that many news reports tell that many of the dogs involved in maulings, have created problems in the past. The owner obviously doesn't care, and the dog, lacking the use of reason, is only able to react to its instincts. Human life is a priority over the lives of animals.

My wife and I arrived home around 1am the other night. We stepped out of the car, parked at the street, when suddenly we heard the clanging of a dog collar and tags. A large pit bull trotted toward us, between us and the house. Thank God it altered its course and continued toward the street, not 10 feet from us.

I'm not sure if pit bulls have an intrinsic tendency toward violence. One theory concerning their image and violence could be based on the attitude of the owners. Do people buy pit bulls because they make great family dogs, or because they have a tough and macho image? Are the owners trying to raise and train the pit bull to be a friendly dog, or to reinforce the image that the owner is tough because he has dominion over a wild beast?
