Man In Wheelchair Ticketed For Riding In Street

The article said he wasn't ticketed for riding (walking,rolling???) on the street in his wheelchair, he was ticketed for obstruction; he would not (by his own admission) cooperate with the police.

That is true, but it also the drivers in the cars called the police. Do you see drivers calling the police when bikes are in the road. No you don't, they have the right of way. It also said this road didn't have any sidewalk for him to run on, what was he suppose to do try and drive in the ditch or on the shoulder. What if he tried that and turned the chair over on top of him. Now stop and think for a minute with today's car drivers. How do you not know he did not recieve any road rage before the police were called that could have caused him to be uncooperated. People do it all the time. I believe he should have the same rights has a person on a bicycle.

Yesterday I saw a woman driving down the shoulder of Youree drive in one of those elderly scooters. She was going about 3 mph.. This isn't the first time I have seen this. In fact this makes maybe 10 or 12 times in recent years that I have seen someone in the street or shoulder on a battery powered motorized wheelchair. This should not be legal, and I always assumed that it was not. I hope the cops pick up wheelchairs and scooters in the streets before someone gets hurt, for the same reasons go carts, 4 wheelers, and skate boards are illegal on public highways. JMO

What makes all of the ones you mentioned illegal but not bicycles.

Bicycles travel at an order of magitude faster than a scooter. 20 mph verses 2 mph. Imagine if something traveled 700 mph on I-20 instead of 70!! Same order of magitude. (10X faster or slower)

Like I said before a bicycle can only travel as fast as the person pedaling it. It shouldn't be allowed on the road either. All you are doing by allowing it is giving kids another excuse to be in the roadway. Because it's legal, but when a child gets hit then they want to gripe and blame the driver. I really don't like this double standard crap. Maybe the guy should drive a riding mower, it goes faster than a chair and he could pull a wagon behind it.
