So I guess the recent rumors regarding "the death of muni wifi" around the country are overstated. :)
http://www.google.com/search?q=death+of+muni+wifi I'm actually still a proponent of muni-wifi, especially when the business plan is developed by a true service provider rather than financial planners who may lack "real world" muni-wireless experience. And not many have real world muni-wireless experience. (if any - The result is all the bad press out there on this subject) |
The fact that Shreveport is considering it makes me believe it is, indeed, done for.

Here's yet another black eye for muni-wifi... I hope Shreveport doesn't fall into the same trap.
Sacramento Wi-Fi plan still stalled Monday, October 22, 2007 (10-22) 08:39 PDT SACRAMENTO, (AP) -- The latest plan to blanket Sacramento with free wireless Internet coverage has hit a financial snag. The city council in June approved a deal to have Sacramento Metro Connect LLC build the advertiser-backed citywide network. But Metro Connect hasn't secured enough financing for the $7 million to $9 million plan, and no work has started on the project. It was supposed to be completed by October 2009. A previous deal with Internet provider MobilePro Inc. fell apart because the city refused to become a so-called anchor tenant, or financial backer. Other high-profile projects in places such as San Francisco and Chicago have also been scrapped recently. http://tinyurl.com/2sqz5a |
