Shyne decision was overturned - but not unanimously.

This may well be the dumbest political thing I can remember happening in recent years. Thankfully win or lose, he's not representing my district.

So do I understand it right.. that the argument came down to whether or not the Governors pardon was either as good or not as good as Presidential pardon ??

Mudbug 08-29-2006 01:17 PM

not that this will help to understand it, but here's where I got my info:

That is insane. Sounds like bad t.v. Convicted of a federal crime, receives a Governor's pardon for his crime, but wait .. oh no.. no Presidential pardon ??
only in Louisiana

Is Joe still Shyne'n?

My father always said that louisiana has the worst politicians that money can buy.

rhertz 08-30-2006 12:41 PM

I think that Louisiana citizens can do better than to keep re-electing the same dubious politicians over and over. At least when some "new blood" is elected, we have a chance of seeing some change for the better.

Hey, what the hell do ya want? This is Lousiana....the politicians are crooked, the food is spicy, the weather is muggy, outside its buggy, the water tastes like it came from the ditch in your front yard and the hole damn place smells like a tipped over Port-a-Potty thats been cooking in the sun for a week. Oh, and I almost forgot...the sports teams suck!

Al, you sound so very Anti Louisiana, been livin' here long ? or where you from ? for me.. "Been here here so long, got to callin' it home"

Yes the Saints if that is who you speak of, have let me down more than a few times, but I'm still rootin' for them, epecially in these difficult times down in New Orleans. If not even so much for the Team itself, but for what ever bit of hope a winning season could bring to the honest folks who are still trying to make a go of it down there. When I read about these folks, been paying into home owner's insurance for 30 damn years, payin' on their houses all this time to have it all washed away, and the Insurance company say "oh we wain't payin'" !!!!

Al, we are way better off here than the ole Wild Wild West! At least we have penicillin. Seriously, I really like spicy food and mild climate. Shoveling ice and snow sux. I have a nice water filter for my ice maker and water bottle. True, does suck for football, but Mudbugs rock!! Louisiana could be a paradise if we stood up and made it so. Well, maybe that is a stretch, but only because we must stand up and vote out the crooked politicians rather than snuggle up to them. As for your last statement, I'm going to pretend I didn't see that.

Al Swearengen 08-30-2006 10:19 PM

Well ..I guess Ive been a denizen of this great state since..oh, lets see.. 1972! Guess Ive more or less earned the right to slam the place...and it's athletic clubs, it's politicians..the whole shebang. Occassionally, when Im fed up with the heat, the corruption, the sordid mess we call "home", I'll let fly with a soulfull rant. Having said that, its never my intention to offend. And, I think just about anyone thats been here longer than 24 hours would be inclined to agree with me wholeheartedly. My sincere condolences to those who have lost their homes and lives to Katrina. In the aftermath, which is still going on, New Orlean's incompetent fool of a mayor and his pet rat of a police chief have committed nothing less than the most serious violation against the Constitution, insurence companies have screwed homeowners, and whats changed? What else is new? Hell, maybe rebuilding that crime infested sewer aint such a great idea after all.

Al, yes I too have lived here long enough to have the right to make my complaints, and yea Shreveport in August can be a tough pill to swallow, no doubt. Regarding rebuilding New Orleans. I know they had their problems down there. But the city of New Oreans is so rich in history and it's customs. a unique city, and I feel it's loss would be terrible for this state and a loss to the Country. Getting that city back to a sense of normalcy is going to be a long road I think.

rhertz 08-31-2006 12:39 AM

I don't know if this is true or not, but is New Orleans is the birthplace of Jazz? If true, this might make New Orleans the most unique city in the entire country. That is, unless someone can name another city that is the birthplace of a new genre of music.

New Orleans is certainly generally considered the birthplace of Jazz. more specifically a section of New Orleans called "Congo Square". Of course it's hard to really pin anything down, for this was before radio and before recorded music. (some time at the turn of the century, very early 1900's)

Jazz was brought about by the many musical influences already available in New Orleans.. coming together around the end of the Ragtime form of music, many early jazz players speak of their ragtime influences. They also had an infusion of European symphony halls and opera houses, segregated with white, black and creole audiences. Ragtime starting off in the Midwest brought down to new orleans by traveling musicians. Mix that in with New Orleans style Funeral Parades and Mississippi Delta migrants bringing in their music of gospel and blues. Jazz is a blending of all these elements that existed in New Orleans at the time. some of the earliest jazz recordings were made in Chicago, but almost all of the hot jazz musicians associated with the birth of jazz were born and raised in the Cresent City.
