HOPE for Shreveport: For Whom the Bells Toll thru December 24

'Bells Over Shreveport' to ring for the homeless weekdays 4:30p

By Tom Pace, Executive Editor, SBLive!
December 13th, 2007

Remember the classic Jimmy Stewart movie, "It’s a Wonderful Life"… when you heard the bells ring each time an angel got their wings? This time, starting Monday, December 17th and, continuing thru Christmas Eve, you’ll hear "Bells over Shreveport" when a homeless person gets housing from Shreveport shelters.

"The angels, in this case, are those individuals who make it possible for the homeless to get shelter," said Teri Brock, Executive Director for HOPE for the Homeless, a regional homeless coalition.

Participating Shreveport churches in "Bells Over Shreveport", will either ring their bells…or, play chimes on their broadcast systems. "These will literally be, 'Heaven's Bells' when they’re ringing at 4:30 every weekday thru Christmas Eve," said Brock. The number of times the bells ring, is based on how many homeless persons received housing in Shreveport shelters that day.

The first four churches to agree to participate in "Bells Over Shreveport":
* Holy Cross Episcopal, corner of Cotton & Texas Ave.,
* First United Methodist Church of Shreveport, head of Texas Street…
* First Baptist Church of Shreveport, on Ockley at Fern
* St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Southfield…
Other churches are excepted to join in the celebration.

"When you’re downtown, or around the South Highlands, and Broadmoor areas, and hear “Bells Over Shreveport” ringing, take a moment to reflect on the many blessings we enjoy during this season of thanksgiving," Brock continued,"This is our way at Hope for the Homeless, along with many of their community faith partners, to give special appreciation to those who make shelter for the homeless possible."

Each day many persons facing or experiencing homelessness, gain their critically sought shelter for the night, the week, and more importantly for a longer term of transitional rehabilitation toward self-sufficiency from the crisis or poverty they have fallen victim to.

"When it comes to the homeless, many times it’s often reflected in HOW MANY ARE IN NEED," Brock concluded, "but we believe, that equally important, is to raise public awareness about the numbers of persons who benefit from the intensive and collaborative efforts within our community to overcome these unconceivable circumstances."
