Post You Need To Always Know What You Are Eating!

Unscrupulous vendors in Thailand have been selling meat of the deadly puffer fish disguised as salmon, causing the deaths of more than 15 people over the past three years, a doctor said Thursday.

"Fugu" puffer fish are a rare, dangerous, and sometimes deadly delicacy at native sushi bars in Japan. About 100 people die per year going for it!

Here's a little info I found on the subject. Why would anyone want to try it?? Beats me...

"The Fugu Puffer belongs to the family Tetraodontidae. Other fish in this family include other species of Puffer fish, Ocean Sunfish and Porcupine fish. Most fish in the family are highly toxic. These fish prefer warm, shallow, tropical waters and can be found in the West Indies, Japan, China and the Philippines Mexico, Taiwan.

So why would anyone dare to eat a food that carries such a risk? I'm not really sure! Let's look at a few facts regarding this most dangerous delicacy:

*The most toxic parts of the Fugu Puffer are the liver, kidneys, reproductive organs, intestines, and skin. The ovaries of the female Puffer are the most dangerous of all.

*Approximately 60% (70 to 100 people per year) of all cases of poisoning by Puffer are fatal.

*In Japan, potential Fugu Puffer chefs go through an intensive training program which lasts from five to seven years, and includes the identification of puffer species, anatomy and the relative toxicity of different parts, preparation techniques, and (of course) first aid."

The Puffer fish toxin gives off a euphoria that is kind of like dancing with death. The chefs have to eat their own sushi in order to pass the test

Yeah I figured it must be a aphrodisiac or euphoria producer or something like that in order to get people to risk it. I just hope puffer fish doesn't start showing up in chinese cans of tuna or pet food or something.

Thai street vendors

I used to live in Thailand. I wouldn't touch anything from a street vendor, and most of the things in a Thai market. Funny, I only bought from the Chinese owned stores in Udonthani.

Last night it was my turn to make dinner. Tuna Helper and a can of tuna. That's two ingredients. I was enjoying my gourmet dinner when my daughter came running into the room screaming about bug. Happens all the time. I'm the bug catcher in my house. So I say "Where is it?" and start to get up after eatting one more bite. She says "In the Tuna Tetrizzini!" What? Sure enough there was a bug about 1/4 inch long in there. Needless to say, we all stopped eatting and made eggs and toast, although my appetite was gone.

The big question in the house is whether the bug piggybacked in the box of Tuna Helper or the can of Tuna. We may never know. I won't be using either any time soon.
