Mayor appoints David Glass Shreveport Interim Fire Chief
30-year SFD Veteran accepts position as search begins By: Tom Pace, SBLive!, Executive Editor December 15th, 2007 In a hastily called Press Conference, late Friday afternoon, at Government Plaza, Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover appointed 30-year Fire Department veteran, David Glass as the Interim Fire Chief, for the City of Shreveport. Glass is currently the head of the SFD’s Fire Prevention Bureau. Outgoing Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran watched, and nodded in agreement as Glass was formally introduced to the media. Glover said he had begun looking for an interim-chief as soon as he had learned that Cochran was being interviewed for the Atlanta, Georgia Fire Chief position. (Cochran’s final day as SFD Chief was Friday, December 14th – he begins as Atlanta’s Fire Chief on January 2nd , 2008.) Glass brings an administrative background as a key component to the interim Chief’s position, one he does not plan to apply for. Mayor Glover said he had numerous candidates apply, but that Glass fit the bill, citing his tenure of 30 years as a key to the job. Cochran praised Glass for the outstanding work he has done, and likewise, said that Glass would carry on the plans for the Fire Department in 2008, with the building of a new Maintenance Facility a priority for the department. Glover said the new chief will come from a pool of applicants, from locally, and outside the city. After passing the civil service and an interview with the mayor, Glover will name the new chief. That process is expected to take ‘til about the end of June. |
