Post Cyber Command at Barksdale: How Real – How Soon?

Cyber Command at Barksdale: How Real – How Soon?

Southern Hills Business Association hosts Economic Development Forum

By Tom Pace, Executive Editor, SBLive!
November 28th, 2007

Cyber Command Headquarters at Barksdale Air Force Base is a very real possibly, according to Rocky Rockett, President of the Greater Bossier Economic Foundation. Rockett, along with Kurt Foreman, Senior VP of the Northwest Louisiana Economic Development Foundation, spoke to the Southern Hills Business Association’s November meeting, Tuesday night, November 27th.

The formal announcement by the Air Force is expected in October of 2008, however, recent rumors indicating that timeline has been moved up to February of next year, could bode well for Barksdale. With the Provisional home for Cyber Command already standing up at BAFB, it would certainly be logical to make it the Formal Cyber Command Headquarters.

Both Foreman and Rockett, addressed the Southern Hills Merchants, painting
a very positive picture of economic growth for Shreveport-Bossier, especially the North Louisiana Corridor. Foreman spoke about the growing impact of the film industry in the Shreveport-Bossier area since Katrina, noting the new Mansfield Studios recently built in the old AT&T facility in Southern Hills.

He also sang the praises for US Support, now occupying the former Summer Grove Baptist Church on Bert Kouns, as another economic boom for the area.
Many other industries are currently expanding across Shreveport, and Foreman
encouraged the Southern Hills merchants to do their part in making the area attractive to other business development.

Name Branding for Southern Hills was on the top of Foreman’s agenda. He said the upcoming “Christmas in the Hills” parade and Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Summer Grove at South Park this Saturday is a good example of how the community is inviting others across to area to be a part of their events.

Although a formal announcement about the Home for Cyber Command is still months away, Rocky Rockett said Barksdale Air Force Base with its Provisional Cyber Command, is still a leading candidate for the new Headquarters.

Rockett also said the International Cyber Symposium being held in Shreveport, Louisiana is drawing large crowds of visitors and vendors alike. Titled:
“Fly and Fight in Cyberspace”, national television and print publications, alike, are filing stories, including The Rolling Stone Magazine.

Rockett alluded to major players in the Computer Industry, like Microsoft and Cisco Systems attending the Cyber Symposium in Shreveport. He said with national and international publicity like this, it really puts Shreveport-Bossier, and Barksdale Air Force Base on the cyber-industry radar.
