Fresh Veggies

I'm not a vegan by any means, but ain't nothing better than fresh okry, 'maters, corn, squash, and don't forget purpahurl peas!

piemaker720 05-02-2007 10:45 PM

I agree. Throw a big mess of greens in with it and man you are set. Fry a little cucumber and eat away. Of coarse the maters got to be cold.

Fried cucumber - now that's interesting. I've always thought of myself as a country girl - I love veggies - fresh & cooked. And being from the south, well everything gets battered & dipped in hot oil at some point.

The cucumbers are new to me though. I like them raw with salt, pepper, and little mayo in a sandwich. Nice, cool refreshing summer lunch! Same with tomatoes - especially garden fresh. No hot house tomato will do. Oh, and the tomatoes need to be room temp - not refrigerated!

Who's got a garden??

Yes ma'am!! I can do the fried eggplant and fresh peas as well!! That's good living!!

Hey fried cucumber is good. Just peel it, slice it, salt and pepper, flour then deep fry. If you ever had fried green tomatoes [my favorite] they have an acidity taste. But fried cucumber has a sweeter taste. They won't give you indigestion. Try them

I do. I have only missed a couple of years since the 80's. I grow tomatoes and peppers mainly. This year I'm also growing two eggplants and my daughter is growing a peanut plant for fun.

Lookin' Good!! :) Lots of yellow flowers.... I agree, fried green tomatos are for impatient people! ;)

piemaker720 05-03-2007 08:25 PM

Hey, we have talked about tomatoes, peas and okrie but what about a good mess of butter beans and a hot pon of cornbread. Soak some cucumbers in vinager with a little salt, pepper and onions or a jar of homemade bread and butter pickles. Sometimes we have pickled squash that is good with the peas or beans.

Madaam, you are truly speaking Louisiana... Please don't forget pickled green tomato relish. I wish I could go back in time with a camcorder and video my grandmother cooking hot water cornbread or making yeast rolls. Not to mention fried apple pies and green tomato relish. Did I mention green tomato relish?? :)

piemaker720 05-03-2007 08:57 PM

Yes, Lest us not to forget a good jar of chowchow or some pickled okrie. I believe in pickling everything I can. Homade jams and jellies to pickles. My son grew up on homemade kosher dill pickles. Hewould eat 5 to 6 cases a winter. My grandson now loves homemade pumkin pie. I fix 27 pies in the freezer in October but he had ate by Christmas. My son and I love bananna pudding. Uhmmm.

Texasbelle 05-03-2007 09:01 PM

Umm Banana puddin sounds good right now!!! I love me some homemade ice cream during the summer. Mr. Belle's is the best. :D

I can see using buttermilk to cook with but for Isaac no butter milk. Now buttermilk is not a veggie but cornbread is and I love cornbread is great with lady cream peas and dipping in pot liquor add a few onions and then get to sleep on the couch

piemaker720 05-04-2007 07:53 AM

My all time favorite is a big pan of homemade biquits and a pot of tomato gravy. A meal in itself. Sop that gravy with chunks of tomato in it. Make you want to slap yo'mama.

Sounds like a good meal to me what time will you have it ready ? :D

sassy1 05-04-2007 03:24 PM

Now knowing the diet of many of the avatars I'm recommending seeing your respective physicians for fasting lipids and glucose testing! The veggies sound great though....:) We southerners know how to kill ourselves with fried food!

piemaker720 05-04-2007 03:45 PM

Thank you for your concern but my glucose is fine. I had mine checked. I just like good food. It's better than fast food.
