Thanksgiving Out /Take home

So looks like my lil Bro' & I'll be in S'port city for Thanksgiving visiting my Mom who will certainly not be cooking or allow me to pay for anything pricey. Where could we find a place that might be worth reservations (at a moderate price) or bring home (Leon's still around and good? Then again smoked bird may be too much for her so maybe there's another take home alternative now days)

Small turkey (or Turduckwhatever perhaps, never tried it), fixin's, etc.

Thanks everyone!

Where's Big Chain when you need it

Try pre-orderin from http://www.nbsmokehouse.com ...have em deliver it right to your mom's door. They've got just about anythin and everythin, somethin different.

Mr. P and I got tired of cooking the turkey ourselves so we cheat and get one from the Hickory Stick. They can smoke it or fry it (I prefer smoked) then all you have to do is just heat it up.
I do the rest of the cooking myself though.;)
I'm sure the casinos have a nice buffet spread if you choose to go out especially the Horseshoe.

Pokie is right Hickory Stick would smoke you a good one. We also get great ham and turkeys at Heaven Ham. You could also call Cush's and see if they would prepare a meal that you could pick up or try A Taster's Choice. Ms. Judy at Taster's Choice is fabulous and she might prepare your side dishes that you could pick up the day before!

Leon's is closed.

Logan Farms does good work. I second Heavenly Ham in general, although I've never had their turkey.

Ok - good ideas - even the pre-order from the smokehouse. Just as I was opening thread to check it my wife remembered Hickory Stick :)

Behind every good man there is a better woman. Mrs. Isaac is a great cook and has many family recipes that she has perfected over the years.

What's in turkey meat that makes you sleepy?
Keith
San Bernadino, California

Dear Keith:
We'd always heard that post-turkey lethargy was a result of a natural chemical found in turkey, the same one that makes a glass of warm milk such a touted sleep aid.
We were surprised when we found a page of turkey tidbits at the University of Illinois Extension site that asserted, "Eating turkey does not cause you to feel sleepy after your Thanksgiving dinner. Carbohydrates in your Thanksgiving dinner are the likely cause of your sleepiness."

Not willing to write this off as a culinary urban myth, we moved on. Dr. Weil, a popular health guru, seemed to confirm our long-held belief, at least intially. He affirmed that the amino acid L-tryptophan found in turkey skin is a natural sedative. But, the good doctor points out that this probably isn't the cause of post-turkey sleepiness:

L-tryptophan doesn't act on the brain unless you take it on an empty stomach with no protein present. So I don't think the amino acid is to blame for the sudden lethargy that hits just about when it's time to do dishes. That's more likely due to drinking alcohol and overeating...

Thankgiving is not thanksgiving without conebread dressin'.... I think some one of the cafeterias (Lubys or Picadilly) takes orders for dressing, but I'm sure it wouldn't be as good as home made. I've seen frozen dressing at Krogers but I never threw the dice and tried it. My old bookeeper used to make the best homemade dressing, even better than my grandma...

Amen. Wife makes a mean cornbread/oyster dressing. Will miss it this year.
