What about snails?

Several things that I have read are promoting "tank janitors" including snails. I already have two cleaner shrimp, and two tiny hermit crabs. I have a 70G aquarium.

Is anyone here using snails or other janitors? what are the pros and cons?

Snails do clean the tank but if they die or run out of food they will add to the nitrate level in your tank causing more algae. Plants and good water changes are best. Changing light bulbs every six months will help too.

Thanks CM. I have some plants in my tank already, but they are having a tough time getting established. I have been thinking about a refugium, but I don't think I have enough real estate in the sump, due to my in sump skimmer. I haven't thought about the lights. Not sure when I got my lights, maybe July or August. Wouldn't more light be better for the algae? I have limited my lights to 6 hours now.

You could grow the snails and then steam them with butter and lemon
Try not to harvest at low tide they might not taste as good :D

not really into eating snails. Tried them once many years ago-too chewy.
