I really would like to have this one... What the heck is a "Silent Auction"?

There's a sheet of paper next to the item with a listed starting price for bidding (and sometimes specifies bidding increments). So you write your name (or ID) and your bid. Someone comes along and ups you, etc. At a certain time the bidding stops and the paper picked up. The person with the highest bid wins the item and pays the cashier and takes home the item.

Sometimes, since it is for charity, the winning bid exceeds the value of the item. Been to a good number of these - they can be a lot of fun. Got a good price on a pearl necklace for the mrs j.nc at a silent auction.
