Internet use could kill off local newspapers, study finds

News audiences are ditching television and newspapers and using the Internet as their main source of information, in a trend that could eventually see the demise of local papers, according to a new study Wednesday.
"As online use has increased, the audiences of older media have declined," Harvard University professor Thomas Patterson said in a report on the year-long study issued by Harvard's Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy.

"In the past year alone... newspaper circulation has fallen by three percent, broadcast news has lost a million viewers," said the study, entitled "Creative Destruction: An Exploratory Look and News on the Internet."

I have noticed recently that The Times keeps switching its format. I mean several different layouts over the summer. I'm guessing they are struggling and losing subscribers due to the internet. Remember when they did away with To Tell the Times because it was derogatory? Well it's back in a new form via unedited emails, I don't really see the difference. Yes I do agree the internet is not doing local newspapers any favors.

I don't think the newspaper *companies* are suffering any. All this is saying is that paper readership is declining while Internet readership is growing. Either way, they still sell ads. I once heard that the cost of the paper barely covers the printing cost. I would rather read "the paper" for free on the internet than pay money to read it on paper, if they make the same money either way...

Duh. How is this a surprise? The Times and all of the Gannett universe is nothing but swill. The internet has given people the ability to read something other than liberal propaganda. The public is no longer force-fed lies, they can choose to read the truth and opinions other than Gannett's online.
