Last Modified: March 11, 2009Lead Belly Blues FestivalLead Belly Blues Festival Often called the 'King of the 12-string guitar',Huddie 'Lead Belly' Ledbetter made the famous journey from Shiloh Baptist Church to the Shreveport Walk of Stars, and made himself known for his clear and forceful singing, as well as his hearty songbook of folk standards. He mastered the twelve string along with the piano, mandolin, harmonica, violin, concertina, and accordion, sometimes surprising his listeners by clapping his hands or stomping his foot. Whatever instrument 'Lead Belly' used, his wide variety of songs were addictive, covering alcohol, racism, prison, cattlehearding, and politics of the day. This annual event is brought to you by the Lead Belly Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by the star’s niece to preserve and promote the musical legacy of 'Lead Belly'.Through museum exhibitions, the Lead Belly archives, global public programming, and an active sponsorship of music education to children and young adults, the creative life of Ledbetter undoubtedly lives on. It will be taking place on the banks of the majestic Red River, in the Festival Plaza in Riverview Hall of Downtown Shreveport. |
